Car Rust Repair Kit
Car rust repair kit for DIY treatment of small surface-rust areas and local corrosion on vehicle bodywork. The kit includes abrasives, rust converter, degreaser, body filler and other preparation materials required to treat and prepare the damaged area.
The system prepares the surface for subsequent priming, surfacing and refinishing. Paint, primer surfacer and clear coat are not included and should be selected separately according to the substrate and paint system.
DIY Car Rust Repair Kit
The car rust repair kit is a DIY preparation system for treating small areas of surface corrosion and local rust damage on vehicle bodywork. It combines the main materials required for mechanical preparation, rust treatment, cleaning and levelling before the subsequent primer and refinishing stages.
The aim is not simply to cover visible rust. Loose corrosion and poorly adhering coatings must first be removed, remaining corrosion treated correctly and the surface prepared before further primers and paint are applied.
What Is Included in the Rust Repair Kit?
The current car rust removal and preparation kit includes:
- 5 × P120 Indasa abrasive papers,
- 5 × P220 Indasa abrasive papers,
- 5 × P320 Indasa abrasive papers,
- 5 × P400 Indasa abrasive papers,
- 5 × P800 Indasa abrasive papers,
- Neo Sil degreaser,
- Kela Rust rust converter in a selectable pack size,
- silicone-remover cloths,
- cork sanding block,
- body filler for levelling suitable surface defects,
- nitro thinner.
Always check the product page for the current kit contents and available rust-converter size.
What Can the Rust Repair Kit Be Used For?
The kit is primarily intended for preparing small areas of surface corrosion, including:
- small rust spots,
- early surface corrosion,
- rust developing around stone chips,
- local corrosion on body panels,
- corrosion following chipped paint,
- small previously damaged areas beginning to rust.
It is not suitable for repairing perforated, severely thinned or structurally weakened body panels. These may require metalwork, welding or replacement of the affected component.
Removing Rust from a Car at Home
Car rust removal starts by exposing the complete damaged area. Corrosion can extend beneath apparently intact paint, so the affected region may be larger than it first appears.
Loose rust, flaking paint and poorly adhering coatings should be removed mechanically. The kit includes several abrasive grades and a cork sanding block for controlled hand preparation.
The correct starting abrasive depends on the actual condition of the surface; not every repair needs to begin with the coarsest grade.
Rust Converter for Remaining Corrosion
The supplied Kela Rust rust converter is intended for chemical treatment of correctly prepared corroded surfaces. Rust converter is not a substitute for mechanically removing loose, flaky or heavily built-up corrosion.
Remove unstable corrosion first, then treat the remaining prepared rust according to the current technical instructions for the product.
Follow the specified reaction time, cleaning procedure and subsequent coating instructions before continuing with the repair.
Progressive Sanding
The kit contains P120, P220, P320, P400 and P800 abrasive papers for different stages of the repair.
Coarser abrasives can be used where required for damaged coatings and initial levelling, while finer grades are available for refining repaired, filled or primed surfaces later in the process.
The aim is not to use every grade automatically but to progress according to the condition of the surface until a uniform substrate suitable for subsequent refinishing has been created.
Using Body Filler After Rust Treatment
If small depressions or surface irregularities remain after the corrosion and damaged coatings have been removed, the supplied body filler can be used on a correctly prepared substrate to restore the surface profile.
Body filler is not a rust-treatment product and should not simply be applied over loose or active corrosion. Rust treatment and correct substrate preparation must be completed first.
Cleaning & Degreasing
Grease, silicone, wax and other contamination can cause coating and adhesion defects. The kit therefore includes Neo Sil degreaser and silicone-remover cloths for surface preparation.
Before applying subsequent coatings, the surface should be clean, dry and prepared according to the requirements of the selected refinishing system.
What Comes After Rust Treatment?
The current kit is primarily designed for rust treatment and pre-paint surface preparation. It does not contain a complete primer, colour and clear-coat system.
Depending on the repair and substrate, the subsequent stages may include:
- a suitable anti-corrosion or epoxy primer,
- primer surfacer where required,
- the correct automotive colour coat,
- a compatible clear coat where required by the paint system.
All products used in the subsequent stages should form a compatible coating system.
Why Treat Rust Early?
Moisture and road salt can enter through damaged coatings and allow corrosion to spread beneath the surrounding paint. Treating early-stage bodywork corrosion before it becomes more extensive can therefore limit the amount of repair required.
However, surface treatment cannot guarantee that corrosion which has already penetrated deeply into the metal can be permanently resolved without further metal repair.
When Is DIY Rust Repair Not Enough?
This DIY kit is intended for relatively small surface defects. Professional body repair may be required if:
- the metal is perforated,
- corrosion covers a large area,
- the panel has become thin or structurally weakened,
- a sill or other safety-critical structural area is affected,
- corrosion is spreading from seams or between panels,
- rust has travelled significantly beneath the visible surface.
In these cases, sanding, rust converter and refinishing cannot replace proper metal repair or welding.
A Practical Starter Kit for Treating Car Rust
The main advantage of the car rust repair kit is that the core products required for preparing and treating smaller corrosion repairs do not need to be selected individually. Several abrasive grades, rust converter, cleaning products, filler and a hand-sanding block are supplied together.
Primer, primer surfacer, colour and clear coat can then be selected separately according to the vehicle, substrate and refinishing system.
Frequently Asked Questions About Car Rust Repair Kits
What is included in the car rust repair kit?
The current kit includes several grades of Indasa abrasive paper, Kela Rust rust converter, Neo Sil degreaser, silicone-remover cloths, a cork sanding block, body filler and nitro thinner.
Does the rust repair kit include paint?
No. The current kit is designed for rust treatment and surface preparation. Primer, primer surfacer, colour paint and clear coat are selected separately according to the repair.
Can I simply apply rust converter over rust?
Not in every case. Loose and flaking corrosion and poorly adhering coatings should first be removed mechanically. The rust converter should then be used on the correctly prepared surface according to its technical instructions.
Can the kit repair perforated rust?
No. Perforated, thinned or structurally damaged metal may require panel repair, welding or replacement. The kit is intended for smaller surface-corrosion repairs.
Does the surface need primer after rust treatment?
The subsequent coating sequence depends on the selected repair system. A suitable anti-corrosion or epoxy primer may be followed by primer surfacer, colour and clear coat where required.
Can surface rust on a car be repaired at home?
Small areas of surface corrosion can be treated at home with suitable products and careful preparation. Deep, extensive or structural corrosion should be repaired professionally.
