Engine Block Paint

Engine block paint sprays for cosmetic restoration of engines, gearboxes and compatible metal components. The current Car-Rep acrylic aerosols are rated to 110°C and provide a gloss finish in several colours.

Painting an exhaust manifold, exhaust system or another component exposed to higher temperatures? Use a specialist high-temperature paint with the appropriate temperature rating instead.

Engine Block Paint for Engine & Gearbox Restoration

Engine block paint is a specialist aerosol coating for cosmetic restoration of engines, gearboxes and other compatible metal components within the temperature limits specified for the individual product.

The current range consists of Car-Rep acrylic engine paint aerosols in black, silver, blue, green and red. These products provide a gloss finish and are specified for temperatures up to 110°C.

Engine block paint should not be confused with general-purpose very-high-temperature paint. Always select the coating according to the actual operating temperature of the component.

What Is Engine Block Paint Used For?

Depending on the component and product specification, engine paint can be used for cosmetic refinishing of suitable primed metal surfaces including engine blocks, gearbox housings and other compatible engine-bay components.

Always confirm that the expected surface temperature remains within the coating's specified limit.

Engine Paint vs High-Temperature Paint

The current Car-Rep engine block paints are rated to 110°C.

This does not make them suitable for every hot component in a vehicle. Exhaust manifolds, exhaust systems and other heavily heat-loaded components can reach substantially higher temperatures.

For these applications, use a specialist high-temperature coating with a temperature rating appropriate to the actual component.

Preparing an Engine Block for Painting

Correct preparation is particularly important in the engine bay because surfaces can be contaminated with oil, grease and other deposits.

  • remove oil and grease thoroughly,
  • clean away dirt and deposits,
  • remove loose corrosion and unstable paint,
  • sand the substrate as required,
  • remove all dust and contamination,
  • apply the specified primer system.

The current Car-Rep engine block aerosol specification identifies primed metal and epoxy primer as the required substrate system.

Does Engine Block Paint Need Primer?

For the current Car-Rep engine block aerosols, yes. Their product information specifies application over primed metal using epoxy primer.

Do not assume that the coating is designed for direct application to every type of bare metal.

Black, Silver, Red, Blue & Green Engine Paint

The current range provides several colour options for restoration and custom engine-bay work, including black, silver, red, blue and green.

Colour choice is primarily aesthetic. Temperature suitability and substrate compatibility remain the more important technical considerations.

How to Apply Engine Block Paint Spray

  1. Prepare, prime and degrease the metal surface.
  2. Shake the aerosol thoroughly.
  3. Carry out a test spray.
  4. Maintain the specified spray distance.
  5. Apply the recommended light coats.
  6. Observe the required flash-off times.
  7. Allow the coating to dry fully before exposing the component to service conditions.

Can an Assembled Engine Be Painted?

Painting an assembled engine requires particularly careful masking. Paint must not enter connectors or reach sealing surfaces, belts, hoses, electrical parts or other areas where a coating could interfere with operation.

For more extensive restoration, removed components are usually easier to clean, prepare and coat correctly.

Engine Paint Does Not Repair Mechanical Problems

Engine block paint is a cosmetic surface coating. It does not improve engine performance, reliability or mechanical condition.

Cracks, leaks, severe corrosion or other technical faults must be repaired correctly before painting.

Safe Use

Use aerosol engine paint according to the product label, technical data sheet and safety data sheet. Paint only fully cooled components and provide the specified ventilation and respiratory, eye and skin protection.

Frequently Asked Questions About Engine Block Paint

What is engine block paint used for?

It is used for cosmetic refinishing of engines, gearboxes and other compatible metal components within the temperature and substrate limits specified for the coating.

How heat-resistant is the current engine block paint?

The current Car-Rep engine block aerosols are specified for temperatures up to 110°C.

Can engine block paint be used on an exhaust?

Not where the component exceeds the coating's 110°C temperature rating. Exhaust components generally require a specialist high-temperature coating with a suitable temperature specification.

Does engine block paint need primer?

The current Car-Rep engine block aerosols specify application over primed metal using epoxy primer.

Can engine paint be applied over rust?

Loose corrosion, unstable paint, grease and contamination should be removed first. Paint does not replace correct corrosion treatment and surface preparation.

Does painting an engine improve its mechanical condition?

No. Engine paint is a cosmetic surface coating and does not repair mechanical faults, cracks, leaks or structural damage.
