PPG 2K clear coats for professional automotive refinishing

PPG 2K clear coats are designed for professional automotive repair and refinishing. The PPG Deltron range includes MS, HS and UHS clear coat systems, allowing the product to be matched to repair size, workshop conditions and the required final finish.

Choosing the correct PPG clear coat affects gloss, flow, drying behaviour and durability. The range includes traditional MS systems, high-solids HS clears and premium UHS technology.

PPG Deltron D800 2K MS Clear

PPG Deltron D800 is a two-component acrylic-urethane MS clear coat designed for refinishing over compatible basecoat systems. It can be used for repair and repainting work with the appropriate hardener and application process.

The D800 system can also be accelerated with suitable PPG hardeners and additives, making it flexible for lower-temperature conditions or repairs where shorter process times are required.

PPG Deltron D880 2K HS Clear

PPG D880 is a high-solids 2K clear coat designed to produce a high-gloss, resistant final layer. It can be used over compatible solventborne and waterborne basecoat systems according to the specified PPG refinishing process.

D880 is suitable for professional bodyshop work where high gloss, durability and improved mechanical resistance are important.

PPG D8131 2K UHS Premium Clear

PPG D8131 is a premium UHS clear coat. Ultra High Solid technology refers to a very high-solids coating system developed for professional automotive refinishing.

Correct hardener selection, mixing ratio, film build and drying conditions are particularly important with UHS products. Always follow the technical data sheet for the specific PPG system.

MS, HS or UHS PPG clear coat?

Do not choose a clear coat based only on its MS, HS or UHS designation. Repair size, application conditions, required drying time and the complete PPG paint system should also be considered.

MS generally refers to medium-solids technology, HS to high-solids and UHS to ultra-high-solids systems. Actual application characteristics and coat structure remain product-specific.

PPG clear coat and hardener

PPG 2K clear coats must be mixed with the correct hardener specified for the individual system. Once mixed, chemical curing begins and the material has a limited pot life.

There is no universal mixing ratio for all PPG clear coats. For example, the PPG D800 system uses a 3:1 ratio, while other clear coats can require different ratios. Always follow the technical data sheet for the exact product.

PPG Deltron refinishing system

The Deltron system extends beyond clear coats and includes compatible basecoats, hardeners, thinners and supporting refinishing products. Working within a matched PPG system helps provide more predictable application and finishing performance.

Different PPG clear coat systems are available for smaller repairs, complete panels and higher-performance professional refinishing work.

Polishing PPG clear coat

High-gloss PPG 2K clear coats can generally be refined by fine sanding and polishing after sufficient curing where permitted by the specific technical instructions.

For dust inclusions, minor defects or texture correction, allow the coating to cure fully and use a sanding and polishing process appropriate for the hardness and condition of the clear coat.

Frequently Asked Questions about PPG clear coats

Which PPG clear coat should I choose?

Choose according to repair size, application conditions and required coating performance. D800 is an MS system, D880 is an HS clear coat and D8131 is a premium UHS clear coat.

What is the difference between MS, HS and UHS clear coat?

The terms mainly refer to the solids level of the coating system. MS means medium solids, HS means high solids and UHS means ultra high solids. The exact application process is always determined by the individual product.

What is the mixing ratio for PPG clear coat?

There is no single mixing ratio for every PPG clear coat. PPG D800, for example, is a 3:1 system. Other PPG clear coats may use different ratios, so always follow the technical data sheet.

Can PPG clear coat be used over waterborne basecoat?

Several PPG Deltron clear coat systems are suitable for use over compatible waterborne basecoats. Always confirm compatibility with the complete PPG refinishing system and technical documentation.

Can PPG 2K clear coat be polished?

High-gloss PPG 2K clear coats can generally be sanded and polished after sufficient curing where this is permitted by the specific product instructions.
