PPG DP40 D834 2K Epoxy Surfacer – Chromate-Free (Grey)

PPG DP40 is a versatile 2K epoxy surfacer that is light grey in color, chromate-free, and provides excellent corrosion resistance on bare metal substrates. It offers outstanding adhesion to properly prepared surfaces such as bare and galvanized steel, aluminium, GRP and fiberglass, OEM paintwork, polyester filler layers, and a wide variety of plastics.

It can be applied using wet-on-wet technique, as a non-sanding isolating surfacer, or it may be air-dried or force-dried. When applied in a single layer, it also serves as a high-quality sealer that promotes excellent topcoat gloss retention.

Mixing ratio: 1:1 (D834 : D835)
Thinner: 0.5 part D866 (above 35 °C use D869 – slow thinner)
Hardener: DP402 / D835
Reducer: D866 / D869
Colour: Light grey

Surface Preparation

Substrate sanding: Bare steel (P80–120), galvanized steel (P400 dry), aluminium (P280–320), OEM paint (P280–360), GRP/fiberglass (P320), polyester filler (P80–120). Always thoroughly degrease before and after sanding using PPG-approved cleaners.

Application

Application method: Spray gun

Recommended nozzle size: 1.4–1.8 mm (depending on the application type)

Number of coats: 2–4 coats (non-sanding) / 2 coats (wet-on-wet) / 1 full coat (sealer)

Flash-off time:
Between coats: 5–10 minutes
Before topcoat: 10–45 minutes depending on process

Drying:
Dust-free: 15 minutes / 20°C
Fully cured: 4 hours / 20°C
Force dry: 30 minutes / 60°C
IR drying: 10 minutes (medium wave)

Recoatability:
On TPA substrates: within 8 hours
Other surfaces: Degrease → Light abrasion → Degrease → 1 coat DP40 → Overcoat within 45 minutes

Note: Do not apply the product below +10°C or above 80% relative humidity. After use, clean spray equipment thoroughly with Deltron thinner or other suitable cleaning solvent.
